A structural or heavy hex nut has six sides and a hollow center with internal threading allowing it to fit over an externally threaded shaft. Structural or heavy hex nuts can be used with various structural bolts, threaded rod, or any other material that has external threading that requires a heavy-duty nut. They are similar to finished hex nuts in general shape and application; but are thicker, wider, and comprised of heavier grade steel.
